Feed Reading

Do you feel like you are starting to "get" feed reading and how it can offer an improvement over traditional web site reading? - I do I really can see how this is an improvement especially the Google Reader. I did not use this utility before and I really do like it as I get more and more immersed in it.

Have you used (at least read) web feeds before? - I have but with other programs that I did not like and thus I stopped using them.

Do you have questions that remain unresolved?- None

Review: All American Blogger

First off I am going to say that I really, I mean really liked the story that I read from this blogger. The article itself is well written, with a rare amount of good sense. It is funny and opinionated without being too overbearing of position at the same time.

I really think that this is journalism broadly. Not something that could have a strictly political standpoint or media standpoint. The position of the article that I had read would seem to indicate that this person has a very middle of the road stance on most issues. He does make it apparent that he does not care for extremism in either direction. He does link to the original source material for the story that I read which would seem to me to be citing his sources. This is way to middle of the road to be considered like the local newspaper. There was really nothing about this story that I disliked, again it was charming, witty and well written.

Review: Daily KOS

This blog was more of a true blog as I saw it, not alot of links to other pages. The article that I did read was the first one for today dealing with Republicans as being the unacceptable party. The article itself was well written, and to a degree compelling.

The idea of this blog is definitely political. However it seems to be so far extreme left wing that it really teeters on the edge of fanatics for me. The article that I read cited no sources at all, there was some information that seemed to be general knowledge and interpretation but there was no real information given in citations. Again as with the last review the lack of sources made it seem very local, the political stance not so local. I would say that the reason that I didn't really care for this blog was that it was so extremely fanatical. I do not care for people or positions that do not allow for another viewpoint, I am a middle of the road kind of guy.

Review: Trend Macro

The blog itself was composed of links to other sources that the authors had written for. The article that I read for this review was really interesting. It was based on the upcoming tax revenue being generated by bills passed in 2005 during the Bush administration. I would say that the meat of this article was very interesting, if dry and technical. I really is not everyone's cup of tea.

The overall trend for this blog was political in nature. The stance that was taken really seemed in the right wing of politics. While I didn't see "true" citations for information, there were several affirmations as to where the information came from (i.e. the firm the author worked for). I would say that the information for this blog vs. the local newspaper seems to give a little more edge to the blogger as he is actually writing it whereas most of the local newspaper seems to give space to the Associated Press. I would say that what I didn't care for the most was the fact that this was a very technical blog. If one is unfamiliar to the political and tax jargon then they become lost. It also gives me the feeling that I am reading one authors collection of works from other sources rather than a true blog.

Blogging and Journalism

Are bloggers journalists? Why or why not? - I would say that bloggers are to be looked at as journalists in the hint of blooming. My reasoning behind this lays in the fact that bloggers have no ethical constraints on their material. Granted a lot of journalists work around this ethical issue, but it is at least believed or implied that they are going to have them. As with Scenario Two, the blogger is denied for what is in my eyes this very reason. He may have a greater circulation of readers but it is the thought process on the ethics behind this as to why he was denied. Yes they could be considered "true" journalists if there was a way of enforcing the same/similar ethics as "true" journalists have.

Bloggers have been responsible for breaking and carrying news stories that have resulted in senators losing their jobs and possibly changed the course of the last presidential election. Is that good or bad? - I would consider this good as there is too many times when one has to consider the company behind the story. How much of a true middle road version of a story would one hear from Fox News or CNN? People should be able to express themselves and their opinions and it would be better to listen to a multitude of honest thoughts than corporate backed propaganda.

Should bloggers have the same rights (to access events, interview, etc) and protections (not to have to reveal their sources) as nespaper and television reporters? - I believe that they should if they can adhere to a similar code of ethics as "true" journalists.

Flickr and Diigo

in what ways do you see them as similar? - I see them both as tagging software. They both allow for a way to find and store "favorites."

What do you think of them-- if you've used other software or applications for photo gallery sharing and/or bookmark storage, how do they compare? - I have used both for a while, however I would say that my favorite tagging software would be StumbleUpon. I really like the ease of that software, rather than the more complicated Diigo and Flickr.

Did they behave like you expected? Will you keep using one or both of them? - They both behaved as I expected them too. I didn't have too much in the way of problems with either of them. I don't know if I will use them more, but I am going to give it a try.

Web 2.0

I have heard of a Web 2.0 only a little. I really have not heard alot on the matter but everything that I have heard of is related to education. Though I do know better now.

If I was to describe Web 2.0 to someone I would probably describe it as the social sharing sites, much like facebook.

I do in fact belong to several Web 2.0 sites, facebook, myspace (unfortunately), youtube, this blog and a few other blogs as well.
